Tempe's older neighborhoods grew remarkable trees for a desert town — flood irrigation made Aleppo pines, olives, and mulberries possible, and half a century made them huge. When one finally comes down, the stump stays behind as a stubborn monument: too low to grip, too rooted to pull without trenching the lawn, too alive in some species to simply ignore.
